A quote from Sunday’s UK Guardian, about Obama’s trip to London:

“With an entourage of 500 staff, an armour-plated limousine and a fleet of decoy helicopters, America’s new president will arrive for his first visit to Britain amid huge razzmatazz on Tuesday for the G20 summit…”

I thought 500 must be a typo, but if you read the complete article, you’ll see that it isn’t. 500 staff on this one trip?? And we wonder why our country is going bankrupt.

Every year I say I’m going to make shamrock cookies. And every year, I don’t have a shamrock cookie cutter.

Guess what I bought at Michael’s last week? Hint: The kids used it today to make our favorite sugar cookies.

Incognito

My sister Kristin tells a funny story about a woman she used to work with who didn’t know the difference between “incognito” and “incommunicado”. When somebody was out of the office and couldn’t be reached, she’d say they were incognito.

I am trying to switch cell phones, and in the process I have gone incognito. :) My old cell phone has 8 minutes or 10 text messages left on it, or any combination thereof. I bought a new cell phone on Saturday and the number still has not transferred over (this may take up to 10 business days…). So I carry the old cell phone with me for an emergency requiring 8 minutes of talk time or less…waiting to get the “no signal” message so I can start using the new cell phone.

Good news for those of you who call me on my cell phone and talk really fast so as not to waste my $.18/minute: my new phone is $.11/minute.

Happy Feet

Bill got to go to Cotillion with Shannon last week for the father/daughter dances. Next year, I get to go, too…since Will will be in Cotillion. He can’t wait.

Sweets for the sweet

Here’s what was on our Valentine’s Day menu:

For breakfast, Lemon-Ginger Scones.

For elevenses, Blackberry Crunch Bars.

You gotta be thinking to yourself, “Why aren’t those people much fatter than they are?” Well, we do eat the occasional salad, I just don’t take pictures. :)

My valentine

I love this guy.

PW’s been reading my blog

I used the word “purport” last Friday in a blog post. Today, she used the word “purportedly” TWICE in her post. Coincidence? Hmmm.

Happy 13th Birthday, Will!

I don’t take pictures of people anymore. Only food. Here’s what Shannon made for Will’s birthday, today!

The recipe is for Cookies & Cream Cake, from the Cake Mix Doctor’s Chocolate book.

Tim Hawkins is a comedian who we’ve seen on video. You can see snippets of his acts on Youtube, if you don’t mind watching pirated clips. In one of his routines, he describes Krispy Kreme donuts thusly: “It’s like eating baby angels!”

I made kolaches yesterday. It was rather time-consuming – I told the kids, “Good thing I don’t have a job.” But let me tell you, popping those tasty morsels in my mouth was like eating baby angels. Sweet, buttery, yeasty, salty, cheesy goodness.

If you are nice to me, I will make you these someday. Only if you are very nice. And then you will know that I really love you.

Sushi!

We made sushi last night. It was our first time trying this at home, and we were moderately successful! We didn’t do any raw fish because we’ve been told that you have to buy special sushi-quality fish at a fishmonger 30 miles away. Hmm, that’s not likely to happen.

We made up some spicy Krab mix:

And we rolled some Philadelphia rolls (smoked salmon, cucumber, and cream cheese):

Bill wanted to try his hand at a rice-outside roll with the spicy Krab:

My pix have a very limited focus because I didn’t realize the camera was on a macro setting. :( But hey, I got to use the word fishmonger in a post!!
